Georgia Tech's demonstration used VI Systems' VCSEL at 850 nanometers wavelength, transmitting at 25 Gbit/s over a long 100 meter plastic fiber. This compares to plastic fibers typical use for shorter runs and 650 nanometers wavelengths at speeds up to 1 Gbit/s in home networks and as slow as 50 Mbit/s for in-car automotive networks. Georgia Tech reported that its transmission demonstrations were error free over cables with 80-micron core plastic optical fiber using relaxed coupling tolerances as high as 35 microns. In the lab, VI Systems reports speeds up to 40 Gbits/s when coupled with high-speed photodetectors and transimpedance amplifiers.

Individual VCSELs fit on a 250 micron square die, but can also be obtained from VI Systems in 1-by-4 or 1-by-12 arrays for proprietary home and automotive networks, as well as for Fibre Channel, Infiniband and other high-speed applications.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Startup ClariPhy is sampling a single CMOS chip aimed at lowering the cost of upgrading long distance optical networks to 40 Gbits/second. The chip is part of a rising tide of silicon for next-generation carrier and data center networks at 40 and 100 Gbit/s data rates.
Carriers are coming to agreement that the next-big step for their long haul networks is 40G transport using dual-polarization QPSK, a coherent form of optical modulation, said ClariPhy founder and chief technology officer Norm Swenson. Standards have been set for DP-QPSK at both 40 and 100G nets, he said.
"There have been many attempts at how to handle [optical long haul upgrades], but now people have gelled on this approach," said Swenson.
The coherent technology "treats light like a radio wave, making use of phase and amplitude information," said Swenson. Designers can use the phase information—lost in today's direct detection technology—to handle several forms of optical signal dispersion in a single CMOS DSP.
Current systems based on direct detection of the light signal use additional components, sometimes requiring additional line cards, to improve the quality of optical signals sent over long distances. The coherent technique also can improve signal sensitivity by using a local oscillator, Swenson said.
ClariPhy has been working for two years on its 40nm chip which is now integrated in customer systems, some of which may already be used in carrier tests. The chip dissipates about 16W and is based on the company's own internally developed analog-digital converter and DSP technology.
The startup hired a signal processing expert early on who created a DSP lab in Argentina. It has analog expertise at its headquarters in Irvine, Calif.
"I worked on a coherent system 10 years ago, but it was all discrete components," said Swenson. "Now you can design a single chip that can do this if you have a very good analog-to-digital front end," he said.

The company’s new PM6373 POLO 40G integrates SerDes, digital signal processing (DSP), analog-to-digital converter (ADC), OTN framing, and Forward Error Correction (FEC) functions for use in 40-Gbps designs. Bennett says PMC-Sierra has targeted both line card and module applications for the device. The POLO 40G could be integrated within an OIF-compliant 5x7-inch module or placed behind CFP2 modules. He admitted he also has his eye on opportunities to replace CoreOptics chips. He sees a significant opportunity to support 40-Gbps transmission in packet-optical transport platforms, OTN systems, and Carrier Ethernet switch/routers or label switched routers with integrated DWDM shelves, such as Juniper Networks’ recently announced PTX Series Packet Transport Switch.

The S28010 Gearbox is part of a wave of chips that aim to enable next-generation optical networks, and one of the first CMOS chips to support 28 Gbit/s signaling.

is the first of a new family of high-speed optical networking chips AMCC plans. It translates a 10-lane, 10 Gbit/s CAUI electrical interface to four lanes operating at 25 Gbits/s, a data rate the latest CMOS silicon is just beginning to tackle for the first time.

W- l8 z- ~0 D2 {8 LThe 40nm chip probably will see its first use in OTU-4 optical transport networks, but eventually could be used in data centers to carry 100G Ethernet, Fibre Channel or Infiniband traffic. The part is among the first devices to comply with both the IEEE 802.3ba standard for 40/100G Ethernet and CFP multi-source agreement for 40/100G modules.

The first generation of 100G optical networking chips generally used ten lanes running at 10G, but the parts were relatively large and power hungry. "Everyone believes four lanes of 25G is going to be where the future is, and in four or five years it will be mainstream," said Tim Warland, a product manager at AMCC., F+ h) A- l: _9 T4 c+ o% F
The multiplexer sits on a CFP module and takes in 10G signals, typically from a network switch chip. It spits out four 25G channels and links to an optical module, sending data over distances up to 10 kilometers on a single-mode fibre.- f/ o; c1 t3 f9 C2 G
The chips will be used in core routers for carrier networks or aggregation switches in large data centers, both interested in moving up to 100G data rates. AMCC has an early lead in the shift from the old Sonet standard to the newer Optical Transport Network (OTN) technology carriers are adopting.1 g1 Q  F' z, H, y" U- g
The company claimed earlier this year it hit a milestone of enabling with its chips one million OTN ports to date. Volumes of the new CFP modules are ramping up to tens of thousands per month now and will hit a quarter million modules per month soon, said Warland.

While module developers work to perfect 4x25-Gbps transmission over singlemode fiber for 100GBase-LR4 and -ER4 applications, technologists have already begun work on enabling similar transmission over multimode fiber. Recent demonstrations have shown progress on both the transmission and reception ends of the spectrum. The demonstrations indicate that 4x25-Gbps products could be readily available once standards are in place.3 M1 e7 n* Y0 O' W  g: o+ g

* T7 o8 R6 u5 n' fFor example, Discovery Semiconductors displayed at OFC/NFOEC a module-based receiver with a photodiode based on InGaAs/InP for these applications. The company followed its OFC/NFOEC activity with more information in a paper at the subsequent “Enabling Photonics Technologies for Defense, Security, and Aerospace Applications” conference sponsored by the SPIE. The paper described three 25-Gbps, 850-nm receiver formats: linear photodiode (PIN), linear photoreceiver (PIN-TIA), and limiting photoreceiver (PIN-TIA-LIM). The paper describes the first as good for instrumentation applications, the second for low-power VCSEL-based 850-nm links that need boosted RF output power to drive the following RF electronics, and the third for on-off links that require sufficient gain to drive the following clock and data recover (CDR) or demultiplex modules often found in digital links. The PIN-TIA-LIM device in particular showed good performance (BER of 10-12 at an OMA of -4 dBm) over 100 m of OM3 fiber./ a/ |6 F4 E7 Q0 J: f# O

7 |, D" K3 C! x" p% q& AAbhay Joshi, president and CEO of Discovery Semiconductors, told Lightwave that his company has supplied photoreceiver technology for 25-Gbps, 850-nm research to a variety of laboratories, universities, and others working on the next generation of multimode transmission. At least some of that research likely is directed at the complementary VCSEL technology. Joshi says that pretty much everyone who has a 10-Gbps capable VCSEL is working on a 25-Gbps, 850-nm version. He expects such devices to be commercially available from multiple sources in the 2013-2014 timeframe.

They also reported error-free transmission over 500 m of OM4 fiber with a received optical power of -6 dBm using singlemode VCSELs.

However, in addition to the necessary technology, standards also must be in place for a market to develop, Joshi allowed. The OIF’s CEI-25/28G backplane work also could create demand for a single-channel 25-Gbps VCSEL-based capability.

The aerospace industry also has expressed interest in the technology, Joshi concluded.

The systems will support 100-Gbps over “hundreds of kilometers” without electrical regeneration, in Huawei’s words.

Huawei says its coherent-enabled systems will allow KPN International to transmit 100-Gbps services alongside existing 10-Gbps and 40-Gbps traffic, which enables 100-Gbps wavelengths to be added to the network without disturbing lower-speed traffic. SAN JOSE, Calif. – Alcatel-Lucent has designed a network processor capable of handling 400 Gbit/second data flows, twice the throughput of the best chip from archrival Cisco. The FP3 will appear in edge routers in mid-2012 and ultimately will spearhead the company's drive into core routers.
The chip is the latest volley in a long standing war among top routers makers including Ericsson, Huawei and Juniper. Each company develops its own network processors with competing Silicon Valley teams.
Cisco rolled out its 100-200 Gbit/s CRS-3 router chip in November. It is said to have a next-generation chip in the works called Pita with as many as 200 cores to handle 400 Gbit/s flows, and Huawei is working on a similar chip due next year.
"Alcatel-Lucent will have a clear advantage for now in throughput," said Shin Umeda, a vice president for router market research at Dell'Oro Group.

What's less clear is how the chips compare in their abilities to inspect and manage data flows for security and other functions. Umeda said Alca-Lu may have an edge because its new FP3 chip is a third-generation effort, and as such has a longer history than some competitors' offerings.
Cisco owns the edge and core router markets, but its share has been slipping in recent years. Cisco commanded 42 percent of the $5.9 billion edge router market last year, down from 57 percent in 2006, according to Dell'Oro. It had a 58 percent share of the $2.7 billion core router market last year, with Juniper in second place at 30 percent.
Alca-Lu and Juniper were nearly tied for second place in edge routers last year at 22 and 20 percent respectively. Alca-Lu does not currently have a core router offering, but is expected to design one around the new FP3 chip. Juniper announced its latest router chip in late 2009.

The FP3 consists of three chips made in 40nm technology, a 288-core packet processor, a traffic management chip and a fabric-access chip. Together the three can handle up to 400 Gbits/s of raw data flow with all inspection and management services enabled, consuming about 0.15 W/Gbit/s.
The cores used in the packet processor are based on the company's own proprietary design.
To support a variety of configurations, the chips are geared to use virtually any form of solid state memory including DDR1 or DDR3 DRAMs, QDR or T-CAMs. Alca-Lu worked with Micron, NetLogic and Samsung to make sure their chips were supported.
Alca-Lu believes it is unique in needing only one chip set per line card. Some competitors such as Juniper require two of their Trio chip sets on a single card, said Tom Jacobs, FP3 product manager at Alca-Lu. Such line cards require a more complex board design, have more points of failure, lower yields and draw more power, he said.
The FP3 chips will first appear by next June in three line cards for Alca-Lu's existing edge routers. One will support two 100 Gbit/s Ethernet ports, another will support six 40G Ethernet ports and the third will have 20 10G Ethernet ports.
The chips are already running on prototype line cards in the company's labs where they are undergoing testing.
With the FP3, Alca-Lu is getting out ahead of its carrier customers, none of whom have deployed 100 Gbit/s production networks yet, said Houman Modarres, a senior director of product marketing at Alca-Lu. As many as 14 of the company's customers have started some form of 100G trials, he added.
"They want systems with many more 10G line card interfaces, and we wanted to accelerate 100G adoption," said Modarres, explaining the leap to the 400G chip.

Bloomberg, citing what its reporters called “two people familiar with the plans,” says that Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) could cut as many as 10,000 jobs through a combination of layoffs and buy-out packages (see Bloomberg’s story). Such a move would reduce Cisco’s workforce by 14%.

According to Bloomberg’s reporting, as many as 7,000 jobs could disappear by next month. An additional 3,000 positions would be eliminated through buyouts of employees who have accepted early retirement offers.

Moore said that the layoffs would include both full- and part-time positions and be global in scope.

Therefore, it appears likely that many of the layoffs will come from activities outside of these areas, such as Cisco’s consumer operations.

Santur announced the general availability of its 100-Gbps CFP optical modules compliant with 10X10 Multi-Source Agreement (MSA). The 10X10 MSA, driven largely by Google, aims to create a lower-cost, more easily developed alternative to the IEEE’s 100GBase-LR4 optical module for singlemode high-end data center applications (see “Google joins tech vendors in 10x10G 100 Gbps optical transceiver multi-source agreement”). 8 z. Because it does not use the 25-Gbps optics or electronics of the latter module, the 10X10 MSA device offers lower cost and obviates the need for such components as gearbox ICs, Santur points out. As a result, Santur says that it will offer volume production pricing of less than $5,000 for 100 units or more. The devices also will feature a maximum power dissipation of 13 W.

Santur says it has leveraged its expertise in creating array-based tunable lasers in creating the new optical module. “For more than 20 years, we have been discussing the possibility of integrating multiple active optical components on a single chip to reduce cost and power.
